Was der Röster sagt

One farm. Two varietals. Two expressions from Volcan Azul. Our Volcan Azul Twin Box brings together two distinctive coffees from Alejo Castro Kahle’s renowned estate in Costa Rica’s West Valley. Grown around the Poás Volcano, both coffees reflect the same exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, while exploring very different expressions of variety and process. Side by side, the Natural Caturra and Obatá reveal the range of flavour possible at Volcan Azul: from elegant dried fruit and florals to bold tropical fruit and fermentation-driven intensity. Volcan Azul Caturra 🇨🇷 Sweet, layered and fruit-forward, this Natural Caturra is a classic expression of Volcan Azul. Notes of dried fig, blueberry and ripe apricot meet fragrant vanilla and subtle lavender, with a silky texture and exceptional clarity. After careful selection, whole cherries are slowly dried on raised beds. This natural process concentrates sweetness while preserving the vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity that define the coffee. Volcan Azul Obatá 🇨🇷 A wilder expression from the same farm. Alejo uses warm anaerobic fermentation to bring out the intensely tropical character of the Obatá varietal, with mango, passion fruit and cherry jam leading into dark chocolate and a distinctive boozy finish. Whole cherries are fermented in sealed tanks for six days, with temperature, pH and sugar levels carefully monitored throughout. The result is bold, sweet and unmistakably funky. One Farm, Two Expressions Volcan Azul has been producing coffee for five generations, combining deep agricultural knowledge with a constant willingness to experiment. Today, Alejo Castro continues this approach through careful work with varieties, fermentation and processing. This Twin Box offers two perspectives on that work. Brew them side by side to explore how varietal and process can transform coffees grown within the same landscape: the refined sweetness of Natural Caturra alongside the intense tropical character of Obatá.
