Description Gakuyu-ini Coffee Factory was established in 1982 on a two-acre site in Ngariama, Kirinyaga County, Kenya. It serves smallholder farmers from the nearby villages of Githiru, Gituba and Mukure, and is affiliated with Thirikwa Farmers’ Co-operative Society. Each producer farms less than one hectare, using compost and farm byproducts to maintain soil health, with inorganic fertilisers applied only when necessary. Ripe cherries are delivered to the factory on the day of harvest, where they are pulped using water from the Kiri River, fermented overnight, washed, soaked and sundried on raised tables. The parchment is regularly turned, sorted and stored in conditioning bins before milling. The factory’s pulper, water recirculation system and conditioning bins support efficient processing and consistent quality, while the careful work of its smallholder producers contributes to the clean, vibrant character associated with coffees from Kirinyaga.
