PROFILE: Crisp and ElegantWITH NOTES OF Blackcurrant, Strawberry, HoneycombROAST: Light Roast For Filter Brewing Download the Kieni, Kenya Transparency Report ABOUT Everything we love about Kenyan coffee shines through in the Kieni. Selected for its vibrant ripe fruit and tart acidity, hallmarks of the Nyeri region, it delivers a clean, elegant cup across all filter brewing methods. Kieni Factory lies just a few kilometers from Karatina, in Nyeri County. It’s run by the Mugaga Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which currently receives cherry from approximately 1,000 contributing members. Mugaga oversees five washing stations in total: Kagumoini, Kieni, Kiamabara, Gathugu, and Gatina, supporting a network of over 4,800 farmers. Many of these producers face low yields, often due to limited access to inputs, aging rootstock, and persistent challenges from pests and disease. To address this, Mugaga offers resources aimed at improving productivity, while also championing initiatives that encourage greater involvement from youth and women in coffee farming. Notably, one-third of their members are women—a figure that stands out positively against the gender ratios seen in many other cooperatives.
