> Boasting a membership of over 1000 producers, the Kagumoini factory is one of several washing stations that belong to the Kamacharia Farmers’ Cooperative Society. Producers from around Kagumoini, located not far from the town of Karatina, grow mostly SL28 and SL34 varieties at elevations between 1600 and 1800 meters above sea level. After harvesting, coffee cherries are delivered to the factory, where it undergoes a fully washed or “wet processing” method. Water is pumped to reservoir tanks for pulping and recirculation. After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight, before it is cleaned, soaked, and spread out on raised beds for drying. From funds set aside from the previous year’s harvest, members of the cooperative can access financing for school fees, access to farm implements, and funds for emergency needs. The co-op’s long-term goal is to increase coffee production through farmer training, especially in the area of sustainability, as well as ready access to inputs. By paying the producers some of the highest returns for their coffee, these goals are well within reach! Expect a nicely layered, full-bodied cup, bursting with citrusy sweet overtones!
